Non-Physical Compliments

non-physical compliments

I came across this poster recently from the @selfcarespotlight – their focus was on how we compliment others and it got me thinking….
What is a Non-Physical Compliment?
It’s a positive way of speaking to ourselves; a practice that is used far too infrequently. ‘You did a great thing today’.  ‘Today I will achieve my aims’. ‘I am great just as I am’.
How to use them
The poster gives some great ideas.  Maybe we need to try these out on ourselves? It is proven that positive affirmations and thoughts create positive emotions, which can actually change our physiology and improve mental, emotional, and physical health.
I’ve read and had many conversations with people, (myself included!!) about weight gained during the lockdown and how we need to get that ‘Summer body’ ready etc …. but….
When these thoughts start to crowd our minds, we could try saying things like those suggested in the poster to ourselves instead! We may not believe them all, but I bet we can find plenty of friends and family who see those qualities in us – and do NOT give a rats bottom about any pounds gained or how we look.
Let’s try saying to ourselves, ‘I am so proud of you and everything you have done this past year’.
What are the Benefits?
Positive conversations with ourselves raise our spirits, help with our self-worth and keep us cheerful and positive.
We got through the lockdown. It was harder than we ever could have imagined. It’s not completely over, but better times are coming.
How do we want to spend that time? Worrying or enjoying?
Be gentle and kind to yourself 🥰 (this is also a note to self – I can also slip back into old habits of body shaming myself). Our future selves will thank you.
